Improving Data Centre Security While Retaining Traditional Locks
While it may come as a surprise, many data centres are still using the traditional lock system for their doors and racks, despite the wide availability of keyed/keyless smart access control systems. The drawbacks and inconveniences of traditional lock systems are countless, yet security vendors have cleverly developed various turnkey retrofittable solutions that can improve the security of traditional lock systems. These solutions minimize disruptions to operations during implementation, while keeping costs low; often at a fraction of the cost of a brand new sophisticated security solution with similar functions.
The Client
• Uses a traditional lock system
• Traditional System/SOP does little in preventing users from bringing the keys out of the Data Centre
• Traditional key logbook susceptible to human errors, easy to sabotage, and pain to audit or conduct investigations
• No real-time monitoring/control over keys
• Keys and logbook managed by security room
The Solution
Yi-Ke Innovations implemented an RFID Key Management System with integration to existing Electronic Visitor Management System (eVMS)
• Multilayer Security: RFID Sensors at Ingress and Egress points, integrated with Access Control System
• An electronic key management system that integrates with the access control system and eVMS system
The Benefits
• The KMS will capture who drew what key and when the key is drawn or returned and is able to generate a report on the status of key
• The access Control system will not allow the key to be brought out of the data hall/centre
• eVMS will not allow users to check out if a key is not returned to the KMS system
• Multiple layers of foolproof security measures to prevent users from bringing keys out of the data centre
